Subtitles in Powerpoint

Over the last few months the language features in Microsoft apps has improved greatly and this is due to machine learning.  Machine learning is software that enables the app to learn the more you use it and with millions of people all over the planet using language features in Microsoft app, there is a lot of data being assimilated to make the service better and better.

PowerPoint now has Subtitles available and it is surprisingly easy to set up so that all your listeners can access your presentation.  Now everyone can access your presentation.  If a language your listeners need isn't available, don't fret. Microsoft are adding languages all the time, so keep checking back to see if it has been included.
  • You can choose the input and output languages
  • You can reach people in your community such as deaf students and students of other languages
  • You can have multiple output languages because the subtitle feature works with the Microsoft Translator app on phones
  • People using the translator app on their phones connect to your PowerPoint presentation by a QR code

The Microsoft Translator App

This app is free on Android and iPhone in app stores.  Anyone wanting to access the subtitles in a different language to the output language you choose will need this app on their phone.

 Setting up PowerPoint for Subtitles

Open an existing presentation, or create a new one.  Once you have finished adding all the content to the presentation you wish to add subtitles to select Slide Show on the main menu and then choose Start Subtitles.  Select the input language = the language you will be speaking.  Select the output language = the language you would like to display the subtitles in. Here the picture shows English spoken in, and Hungarian subtitles coming out.  You can have English in and English out if you wish.  Then choose Additional Settings.

 


Additional settings give you more control over how your subtitles are viewed.  Enter your name, then you can choose where the subtitles appear on your screen; at the top or at the bottom.  If you wish to have people access your presentation in a different language to the output language, then you need to check the Add Instructional Slide box.  Close this window when you have finished to return to the previous Setting up Subtitles window.



 Now you are ready to Set up your subtitles.  This takes a while to programme, so make sure you allow 4-5min for the process to take place.  While it is setting up the subtitles, there is a collection of useful tips that pop up as you wait.


Using the Microsoft Translator App to access in even more languages

When your presentation is ready, you can start presentation mode as you would normally.  The following slide will appear at the beginning as it has been inserted by the Subtitle process. This is the instructional slide.  People wishing you access your presentation in a language different to the language you speak and the language of the subtitles, scan the QR code using the QR code scanner within the Microsoft Translator App on their phone and that connects them to your presentation.  You need to make sure you computer has access to the internet for this service to work.

Connected Educator's Challenge - create a blog

An absolute newbie, that's me.  This blog will contain my thoughts about ideas that influence me as a teacher, passionate student of science, juggler of home and work. So this is the first entry, step one of the challenge. NZ MIEexpert Hui 2018 - curriculum Ideas

What is an MIE-E? On a weekend in the July school holidays, all the teachers in the NZ Microsoft Innovators Educator Expert programme (MIE-E) came together for the first time ever.  MIE-E teachers are super keen on using technology as tools to advance learning and learning experiences for our students and they are some of the most creative, innovative, and critical thinking teachers I know.  This programme in NZ is part of a global MIE-E programme supported by Microsoft.  It was awesome meeting people I'd come to know on Twitter, though our Yammer thread, and during our monthly Skype calls.  This gathering was funded by the Ministry of Education via the Networks of Expertise programme.    The whole weekend was put together by our MIE-E Fellows.  The Fellows are the gurus of the MIE-E programme in NZ.  Like all educators conferences in NZ, we had Keynote speakers plus a collection of teachers volunteer to share their knowledge in seminars and workshops.  Anyone interested in be
